Energy Modeling

Client: Bentall Kennedy LLP Developers

Role: Energy analyst (Rienbold Eng.)

The project is a twelve-storey residential tower with eight units per floor. The project utilizes fan coil system and heat recovery ventilators. Energy simulation is used to achieve LEED accreditation and building permit. Building assemblies calculations was conducted using LBNL THERM to optimize the building envelope design.

Broadway Block, San Diego, LEED 2009

Role: Energy analyst (Rienbold Eng.)

Energy simulation and daylighting simulation are used to assess the performance of the project in order to achieve LEED accreditation. The Broadway block is a full block mixed used development, comprised of 20- story and a forty-one story high-rise tower on top of a six-story podium and 3 levels of below grade parking. The podium is wrapped on the ground floor with two story retail spaces and a residential lobby for each of the two towers. On the upper podium levels, the parking levels are wrapped with residential units. The project uses VRV heating and cooling system.

Two energy models were prepared for this project. The first was performed to determine the approximate energy use of the existing building. The second model was performed to determine the impact on energy use of a proposed upgrade to the existing windows.

Energy simulate is used to assess the performance of the project in order to achieve building permit. The project is composed of two towers, 23 floors and 28 floors with a common platform and an amenity building. The project utilizes zone side water to air heat pump with a mixed water loop system.

19 Duncan Tower, Toronto, ON, Preliminary Analysis

Energy modeling was used to simulate the performance of a sixty story tower that has ERV and underfloor air distribution system. The project has a retail podium and six stories of office space and the rest is high-end residential units.

Energy Modeling, Measurement and Verification

Role: Energy analyst (Vision-e)

ASHRAE level 3 energy auditing was used to evaluate this five stars hotel with a total gross area of 36,104 m2 distributed over three public floors, ten guest rooms’ floors, plus three underground floors. The building’s main mechanical system is a fan-coil system served by a set of air-cooled screw chillers.

ASHRAE level 3 energy auditing was used to evaluate this three stars hotel with a total gross area of 12,902 m2 distributed over two public floors, fourteen guest rooms’ floors, plus three underground floors. The building’s main mechanical system is variable refrigeration system (VRV).

MechWave Arriva New Head Office, Design optimization

CFD analysis

CFD was used to design the under floor air distribution system. Energy use was 15% more efficient compared with conventional design.

TELUS BC-hydro, Energy Efficiency Upgrade

RETSCREEN was used to study the feasibility of various energy efficient measures. Recommendations included installing solar water heaters, cooling and heating coil bypass dampers, and fan VFD drives.

SHAW Data Center, LEED 2009

Whole building simulation and CFD were used to model a massive prospective LEED silver data center and office building. Systems in the building included evaporative cooling, VFD fan-coil systems and VAV systems.

CFD analysis was used to investigate innovative mechanical and natural air distribution techniques. In the above examples it was used to optimize the performance of the cooling system in server rooms.

TransCanada Pipeline Tower, Cooling Upgrade

A load profile was generated using energy simulation to address use pattern. The load profile revealed that cooling loads for more than 30% of the year are just 15% of the peak load. The proposed solution was to install a smaller chiller that works close to its maximum capacity during shoulder loads. That guarantees operation at maximum efficiency all the time. Energy simulation predicted 40% saving in cooling energy use. This is 15% of total energy use.

A comprehensive energy audit for the mechanical system was conducted. It was recommended to replace the constant flow heating and cooling water systems with variable flow. It was also recommended to add a variable frequency drive to the supply fan instead of damper control.

Vulcan Elementary School, LEED 2009

Measurement and verification, Energy modeling

Client: Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)

Role: Researcher (University of Calgary)

A calibrated model was built for a new LEED gold school according to IPMVP regulations. The building utilizes displacement ventilation, radiant slab, CO2 supply control, water efficient plumbing, heat recovery, and improved lighting. Results were compared with both MNECB and ASHRAE 90.1.

PIII Calgary Board of Education School

Both EnergyPlus and EE4 were used to model a typical prototype LEED k12 school. Technologies used in the project included heat recovery ventilation and economizer. Results were compared with both MNECB and ASHRAE 90.1.

Triovest Saddleridge B2 Office and Warehouse Facilities, Calgary, Building Permit

Role: Energy analyst (Vision-e)

Energy modeling was used to achieve compliance for National Energy Code as part of building permit application process. The project is a one storey warehouse that includes 6 tenant spaces, each provided with front glazed curtain wall and a set of overhead doors in the back, plus two mechanical rooms for water meters, fire system, and electrical panels. The exterior facades are mainly precast concrete sandwich panels and the roofs are insulated above deck with R30 insulation.

Pepsi Cross Docking station, LEED 2009

eQuest was used to model a prototype cross docking distribution building in order to achieve LEED silver. Technologies used in the project included heat recovery ventilation and high insulated envelope.

Research

Earth-side Net-Zero greenhouse

Energy modeling

Role: Researcher (SAIT polytechnic)

A group of EnergyPlus models were built to study the performance of a high-end energy efficient greenhouse prototype. The design incorporated the use of underground thermal storage water tanks connected to an array of solar collectors. Earth tubes were used to provide makeup air and a triple wall polycarbonate panels replaced normal glazing. Photovoltaic were used to generate required power.

Heritage Hall Energy Upgrade

EnergyPlus models are used to study the effect of adding insulation to the existing non-insulated historical building of SAIT, then hydrothermal analysis using WUFI is done to study condensation and water control in the building envelope.
